Our 1982 Compac 16 "Grace Period"

Grace Period was our first family sailboat.  We had been sailing a Spindrift Rascal daysailer, but with the advent of children, it was clear that the Rascal was too "wet and rocky" to sail comfortably with young children.

Like so many others, we didn't know we were in the market for a different boat until we found this boat  for sale. But as you can see in the images here, our Compac 16 proved to be a very good starter boat for a young family.  The Compac 16 is a very well built sailboat with a devoted, informed, and helpful community of sailors from which to seek ideas and advice.  While not the greatest performer to windward, Compac 16s are very stable and comfortable sailing boats - perfect for a young family.

We owned "Grace Period" from 2000 to 2005, when it became increasingly clear that our family (which by 2005 included two quickly growing boys) needed more cabin and cockpit space.  We really wanted to do overnight sailing trips with the entire family, and while the quarterberths on the Compac 16 will sleep two adults relatively comfortably (we did it several times - just don't pack too much gear!), there was no room for the four of us.  In 2005 we sold Grace Period to a wonderful family in Wisconsin shortly after purchasing Praxis,  our Starwind 19.
